On Friday 27, the former Luxembourg Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker was nominated by the heads of state from the 28 European member states to become the next President of the European Commission.
As lead candidate of the EPP group in the European Parliament, Mr. Juncker officially won the election in May when the EPP was able to maintain their position as the largest group in the Parliament.
According to the Lisbon treaty which entered into force December 1st 2009 the governments, when appointing the next President of the European Commission, are to take into account the outcome of the EP-elections. On this backdrop the various European political ‘families’ ran campaigns to promote their lead candidate for the job as new President.
A final acceptance of his Presidency are to be made in the Parliament on the 16th of July.
