On August 10th, the Turkish Prime Minister Recep Erdogan won the first of two direct presidential elections in Turkey. With more than 50 pct. against 38 pct., Mr. Erdogan won with a huge margin over his main rival Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu. The huge margin also meant that there will be no second round in the presidential elections.
The current foreign minister, Ahmet Davutoglu, will most likely be new chairman of the ruling AK Party and will then become prime minister after Erdogan is sworn in as Turkey’s first directly elected President on August 28th.
